Jason and Family,

Very sorry for your loss. It is always horrible to lose a family member, but even worse when it is so abrupt, and obviously such a good person. You and yours are in my families prayers.

Coffey Men... Your family was my own at times & Darren never failed to treat me as the little sister you all figured I would become. I loved him for it and have never forgotten. I am devestated, to say the least, that Darren's gone. I know he was more than just a presence in people's lives, but an inspiration. Never failing to make sure everyone knew they were welcome in his. My love is always with you, and my prayers are going out for God to comfort and bring you peace. I love you guys... and more than that... Darren LOVED his brothers.

Darren,
You are missed and loved by many. I was always impressed with the person you were in our youth and I saw thru glimpses along the way the great and inspirational man you had become.
My favorite memory of you was a trip about eight of us took to Banner peak behind Mammoth circa 1995. It became a bit of a competition who would summit first and the man who complained the least summited first. Darren was the first to the top.

Coffey Family:
We are all here to help you through this painful time. As time passes I hope you can all look at Darren in the way I did that day, just the first to the top... awaiting your reunion in heaven.

Darren "Deez",

Catch you on the flip side bro, much love.

To the Coffey's,

Darren was a true kindhearted person and always handled things calm, something that I admired, for I lack sometimes. He was easy going and never showed a bad streak. I never can recall a time where I was upset with him, why? Cause he was one cool cat. This news hurts and is a shame that he has left us. I wish more people with his out look walked this earth. He was a good man.

Although its been years since we had last seen each other my last memory of Darren was great, he was always so mellow and relaxed even in chaotic situations. He's one of those people you knew that would always be nice and chill and he was pleasant to be around. To the Coffey family my prayers to you are that you can find peace in such a heart wrenching time. I am terribly sorry for your loss.

Darren was my best friend at Cal State. We hung out every night after school just listening to music and talking because we just liked each other's company. Having Darren in all my classes really brightened my days and made school fun. On our 4 day field trip for Geomorphology, Darren not only brought me a tent to use, but he set it up and took it down for me every day! He was the sweetest guy in the world, and the only friend I made at CSUSB that was a friend afterward too. Even though I hadn't seen him since 2002, Darren called me every year on my birthday, and I will miss those calls for the rest of my birthdays! The hardest thing for me about Darren being gone is knowing that because I was "too busy" I didn't call him back after his call on my last birthday. The sense of regret I feel for not finding the time to make that call is overwhelming. I loved and adored Darren so much, and wish more that anything I could have the chance to tell him how dear his friendship was to me.

You are and were one of the greatest friends I have ever had. So many memories come to mind and the fun that we shared. Going to Garnes house after 2 a day practice. Or our spring break in brekenridge. My life has been blessed just by knowing a friend as good as you.

To the Coffey family,

My hearts and prayers go out to each and every one of you. Darren was truly a reflection of the type of family that you are, very open, sincere, and I will never forget anything that your family or Darren ahs done for me.

...Darren, wow brother. Found out while I was in Lucerne on Sunday. Hard to believe. I didnt hang with you too much but I never seen a bad time while you were around. It was an honor to have known you. Thanx for taking the time to throw up all the waves to me and Gen when you would drive your old pickup up and down my street, two, three times a day. I dont think I have ever waved at anyone so much. Still blown away. Peace to your soul, and to the Coffey family.

Darren will always be remembered, by us, for the kind-hearted person that he was. As kids, he never got caught up in the cliques and neither one of us can ever remember a time that he was cruel to anyone. Darren always went out of his way to make everyone feel welcome, and to sit and chat, even when we hadn't seen him in years.

He was a truly special person, and never waivered in his kindness during the 20 years or so, that we were fortunate enough to have known him.

Thank you Darren.

Darren Coffey;
We live our lives from day to day, not knowing what is around the next corner. I always envied my cousin Darren as he never seemed to let the corner bother him and lived life to its fullest. I have traveled the world and seen and experienced what many would not go near but always seen my cousin as a hero; a person who treated life as his own playground and seemed to take it for a ride. I was always entertained by his adventurous stories and cherished the times we were able to meet, drink and talk during my leave and between his exciting activities. I will miss my cousin dearly. He was a guy that always found a good thing to say about everybody. He was the person that we should all try to be or at least learn from.

I am truly honored to say that I am your friend and I look forward to the day that I will meet you again. I honestly cannot believe that you are no longer with us. I wish so badly that I would have seen you lately--like Havasu cove camping, skiing, or just having you over for a BBQ. I'm sorry for not keeping better contact with you. Our hearts are breaking for your family. Darren was like another son to us. He helped fill our home with joy and a LOT of laughter. His untimely passing has left a void that cannot be filled; and we are better people for having known him. Darren knew these mountains like the back of his hand. That terrible day was a combination of all the wrong factors creating a tragic "perfect storm." Darren is loved. He was one of the finest of young men, living life to its fullest potential. He is already missed.

Darren,
You are the most kind and simplistic person I know. You have such an awesome appreciation for life…..
I remember going on a river trip to Havasu with you and some friends from Ski Patrol. You woke up really early on our last day there. It wasn’t because you wanted more time on the river, boating, like the rest of us, it was because you wanted to “cruise route 66” all the way home. I remember thinking back then, “How awesome is that”? You took time to do and experience things that most of us didn’t. I look back and remember all the laughs we shared throughout our years together on Ski Patrol. Thank you…..they will always be cherished!

P.S. It is true….God does take the good ones!

To Keith, Eric and Jason,

Having lost a brother myself, it saddens me that you are having to endure the pain and emptiness of such a great loss. Please try to take comfort in knowing that Darren has moved onto a better place then us. Keep in mind that again, one day, we will all be together with our brothers, Darren Coffey and Aaron Barber. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to your entire family.

With much love,

My condolences to the Coffey family-a family I have loved and respected for many years. I have nothing but good memories of Darren. I haven't spoke to him for probably 15 years but I still remember those back pack trips in the Sierras and skiing with him occasionally. As many have said, he was just a fun guy to be around.

I am glad to see that he found a profession that he loved and cared about. It seems he enjoyed life and at least he died doing something he loved.

You can shed tears that he is gone
or you can smile because he has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all he's left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember him and only that he's gone
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what he'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on!

Today I returned to the Lytle Creek Ranger Station and walked down the hall to Darren’s office as I did many times, but this time the door was closed. Knowing that Darren was not returning was difficult but knowing that Darren was doing what he loved to do was comforting. Am honored to have had the opportunity to work with Darren over the years on the Front Country Ranger District and he’s going to be missed among all he touched.

Darren's Family,

I've known Darren since February of 2007. I literally bumped into him as I walked into the back hallway and he smiled, laughed and said welcome. He was such a gentleman always.

His smile and his humor will be what I miss. To him there was never a stupid question, he was always willing to answer my questions. He was a walking library of information. His life was in his work and he did make a difference. You can be proud of the impact he made on people and the surrounding areas in such a short amount of time.

My families thoughts and prayers are with your family. He was truly an awesome man, and he will be missed immensely.

I worked with Darren on many occassions @ both the Mill Creek & Lytle Creek Ranger Stations. More recently, we worked together on some of the unfortunate wildfires that threatened our local communities. Darren was the absolute "nicest" most kind & gentle guy I have had the pleasure to know & work with. He always had a smile, & was for the most part, quiet & reserved. This is indeed a terrible tradgedy & I will miss him. He was a really great person to be around & had a calming effect upon me.

Darren,
What can I say? Growing up in Wrightwood you get to know people and grow with them together that it almost makes you like a family. I remember being just a little runt on the sidelines as a ball boy for the football team when you and Eric played. As just a little kid I remember how big you all seemed to me and I really looked up to you guys as big brothers. Even as I grew up you were one of the guys that I would always look up to. I remember how cool it was running into you at Cal State after not seeing you for years! The last couple times that I hung out with you I can just remember this peace that you had about you and your surroundings that will always be an inspiration to me and how to better live my life. Larry often told me about your backpacking trips to Banner Peak and the contests that you two would enter at the Mountain Warfare Training Camps and since then I've wanted to go try them out. Well maybe not the contests! ~ but definitely the backpacking trip. :) I only wish that I could have experienced that with you but now I will just have to do it in your honor someday. I love and will miss you forever Darren!

To the Coffey family,
I only really knew Eric and Darren, but growing up just on the other side of HWY 2 from you, and from being Lori's little brother I have always known what a special family you are. Words cannot say how truly sorry I am for your loss. I lost my son Gannon four years ago and I can only hope that Darren is up there with him teaching him how to ski right now! All of my love,

To all the Coffeys--
To my son, BK, Zach and Tye--
To Darren--

Darren is special. I was lucky enough to know him because he is one of my son's best friends, and for years they hung out together, played together, skied together--I think they spent more time at the Cramer house than anywhere else. I can still see them at the skateboard ramp or trampoline--laughing, arguing and trying to outdo one another. They were true friends--they played, laughed, argued, fought and always came back together--worried about each other's problems, rejoicing in each other's joys and successes, and helping each other get over the difficulties, trials and tribulations of adolescence and growing up.

They all grew up, but they never grew apart--they remained close even though they sometimes saw each other rarely. Each had a path that they followed--but the paths crossed all the time. Boyz--always remember chips and salsa, boat trips to Mead and Powell, and the premature death of Don Knotts. It can't get better than that.

When I would return to Wrightwood, Darren was someone I always seemed to run into. He remained the sensitive, caring, and uncomplex person I saw develop as a young man. What you saw was what you got--no subterfuge or hidden agenda. He followed his own muse--he lived his life the way he wanted--and judging from the comments of friends and family, we are all the better for it. Of course, we will miss him mightily, but he will always remain the Darren we knew, loved and respected.

Nothing can make the pain go away or make up for the loss--but he would want us to endure, and remember him as we do--wonderful, happy, and loving.

Big Stroker misses you, buddy--

You are one of a kind, and I should only hope that people follow your example of kindness. It is your graduation day and you have been chosen for greatness. I miss and love you. Until we meet again. It's still hard to believe that you are gone! I would have never guessed a great person like you would be taken from us so early. I remember in high school you were one of the first people I met when I started ninth grade. You were then as you are now - a person that I respected and someone that I could say was a good friend of mine. You will be missed but never forgotten! Kory Knisely

Darren,
Your amazing life is a true testament for how we should all try to live. I am so grateful to have had the honor of knowing you and being able to call you my friend. I remember our talks at Cal State, and on my little red porch when I lived down the street. I was so inspired by you; you knew exactly what you wanted to do with your life, and I always hoped that I would find a calling for myself like you did. The world has lost a great soul and I will miss you very much. I hope your family finds comfort knowing that you are in a beautiful new place, where you can experience and explore a new kind of life. You are all in our prayers.

The Lord is your Shepherd. You shall not want. You will rest in green pastures and walk beside calm waters. He restored your soul. He leads you on the path of righteousness. Though you walked through the darkest valley, you will fear no more. He is with you and you are comforted. A table has been prepared for you. Welcome Home! You will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!

Darren, You have blessed so many with your life and continue to bless us in passing. As we weep, we are reminded how precious and uncertain each of our lives are... And how faithful God is. We will meet again.

Coffey Family, Our sincerest condolences. You are each remembered in our prayers.

Hi Darren, I remember seeing you at the Yodler, walking by with a cold mug of beer wearing a big ol' grin and talking to everybody you passed on the way, including me, all we said was "hi" but that was okay. You looked like such a happy and likable guy, I wish I would have met you personally and got to hear a story or two about your life. I met your brothers Eric and Keith last Friday at the Yodler, quite amazing guys, a lot like you, May you R.I.P. Love Karen

When I lived with the Coffey familey for about a year, there were two bathrooms. One was upstairs (Keith was not living there at this time), and one was downstairs. The Upstairs bathroom was DISCUSTING. The floormat was nasty (never been washed) tooth paste was all over the sink. Drakkar Noir crap mens smelly stuff was on the counter. That bathroom was Darren's (and Eric's). Darren, I hope you have someone cleaning your bathroom where ever you are.

With Love

Darren,

In case I never told you, I thought you were great--your laugh, your memory of insignificant things I said and how I made you nervous.
I just wish there was more time.
And thinking back to one of our last conversations, it seems that fish are not so replaceable.

To the Coffey Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with Darren and the family. I am Eric's friend and colleague. It is possible that I met Darren at one of Eric's music shows, but nevertheless, if Darren and Eric are anything alike, he must have been a great person to have as a friend! May you find peace and assurance in this difficult time.

Darren, As the new kid on the block in 9th grade, you made it an easy transition for me to a new school. For that I thank you.

We shared a few classes, some laughs and some sweat on the football field. You and Larry always made practice barable with your hilarious comments. Though it's been years since we last saw eachother, I have thought back from time to time and remembered those moments with a grin. You had a special way about you that everyone admired, myself included.

So tomorrow when we all come together to say goodbye to you in the best way we know how, you will see the lives that you have touched with how you spent yours. Even in death you continue to touch our lives. Tomorrow your bringing together friends and family that haven't seen eachother in a long time. I'm sure we will all exchage funny stories about you and express our saddness now that your gone. But we will also be reunited with old friends and look back with joy at the times that we all shared.

However different we were back then or might be today, the one factor we all had in common was you.

Thanks for being the person you were.

I was brand new to California in April 2004 and had the pleasure of working with Darren at the Forest Service. I was overwhelmed by the number of plants out here and Darren always took the time to help teach me, even when I asked him about the same plant a hundred times. He helped me with locating illegal OHV trails on the forest and with small mammal trapping, which he really enjoyed. He was always very repectful of nature. While we worked, he taught me California terms like "socked in," and what places I should see in the state. I didn't know a soul when I moved here and I always enjoyed working with and talking to Darren.

My heart goes out to his family and friends. He was a wonderful person.

I saw a shirt today that said "In Loving Memory of Darren Bodie Coffey" with a mountain scene on the back. My heart sank.

The first thing I thought is that there clearly must be two "Darren Bodie Coffeys" because Darren was not dead.

I was very proud of going to school with him at CSUSB. I looked up to him because he was a very dedicated person. I learned a lot from him. He was so proud when he became a botanist for the Service (I used to tease him when he stopped focusing on his Environmental Studies degree to do biology...funny thing is we both became biologists). We took a ton of classes together, and on occasion we ran into each other in the field after we graduated. Darren was really into the Geography and Environmental Studies club at CSUSB because it got a few of us together regularly to go out hiking, or to just hang out. I tried to call him a couple of months ago to see if he was going river rafting on the Kings River as we have done together in the past (it is put on by a professor at the university every year)...the number did not work. I was disappointed that I did not get a hold of him, but I was really hoping that I would see him there anyhow...That trip is this weekend, and unfortunately, now, I know he will not be there.

I am so thankful that I was blessed to be able to spend substantial time with him doing what he loved to do...being outdoors.

Darren is awesome, and his family should be very proud for turning out such a great young man. The world has lost a lot when they lost Darren.

Darren....
It has taken me a long time to actually put something on here. I lost contact with everyone over the years and my dad was the one who first told me of this tragedy. I think back to so many of the memories we had together brother...the "Brew Crew" as we called ourselves. We had the time of our lives back then. I have never known anyone with as kind of a heart as Darrens. One thing I know for sure is that the memories still remain. Your presence had effected so many peoples lives. You were a true friend and those are hard to find. This is a loss that won't easily be forgotten. Although we lost contact over the years, the memories will remain with me always. I know this is not good bye, cuz some day, I will see you on the other side. Here recently I have been listening to a song that makes me think of you bro..."Bro Hymn" by Pennywise. Its basically about an untimely death. You will be missed but never forgotten! It has been a great honor and priveledge to have known you my friend!! Much love!!

To the Coffey family,
You are all in my thoughts and prayers and I wish you all much love. I am at a total loss as to what to say here to you all.

Dear Coffey Family,

You do not know me nor did I know your son. It was a girl name Kacey that showed me what a wonderful person Darren was in his life here. This website is wonderful and I believe it really captures the goodness of Darren. Please be comforted by your wonderful memories of Darren. Although I did not personally know Darren I feel through Kacey and this website that I did. I do know the pain and sorrow of losing a child and brother at early. I do know the pain of losing someone so young and full of life. I lost my 20 year daughter,Holly Elizabeth McGrath,on September 16, 2006. It is a telephone call no mother should ever received. I will pray that God will comfort you and bless you with all Darren's good work during his life here on earth. Cling to the promise that you will be reunited with him again some day.

Sincerely,
Robin McGrath
